Selections from UpCountry, an ongoing lens-based project, are on view at the Ridgewood Public Library, October 1 to 31, 2025. The installation invites viewers to reconnect with the pastoral landscapes, agricultural history, and farming traditions of northern New Jersey.
Drawing on imagery from the “Egg Farm,” UpCountry offers a contemplative exploration of the quieter rhythms of rural life, urging recognition and stewardship of what remains. Amidst accelerating overdevelopment transforming rural landscapes across New Jersey and the nation, this project centers on a single farm in Bergen County, managed by the second generation of a farming family with roots in Denmark. UpCountry invites reflection on preserving farmland and open spaces, not merely as remnants of the past, but as threads in a shared ecological fabric, a quiet reminder of the ordinary, the tranquil beauty of rural life, and the silent voices of the land.

Kachajian's UpCountry invites viewers to reflect on the pastoral character, agricultural history, and farming traditions of northern New Jersey, elements made vulnerable by the region’s accelerating pace of development.
Raising questions about what we lose in the name of progress, UpCountry seeks to inspire the conservation and protection of Bergen County's remaining rural properties. It stands as both a tribute to our shared heritage and a call to the memory of place, and the silent voices of the land.
